A photography invoice has to explain three things clients mix up: the session or day rate, the retainer they already paid, and what they are getting the rights to. This template puts the retainer as a credit, has a line for usage or licensing, and keeps deliverables (edited images, prints, albums) as their own lines.
Free, fillable, US Letter. No email, no sign-up. It works for weddings billed in stages, portrait sessions billed once, and commercial shoots with a licensing fee.
What the PDF looks like. The hints in the line table show the lines a photographer typically bills; type over them.
The couple paid $800 in January; the final invoice in June has to show it or you'll get a worried email.
Commercial clients assume they own everything. “Usage: web and social, 2 years, non-exclusive” on the invoice prevents the argument.
If the price includes 6 hours of editing, say so. It explains why 2 hours of shooting costs what it does.
Lines a typical job produces. Labor and materials are separate, and anything already paid is a negative line so the total is the balance due.

Avo keeps your clients and your usual line items, so the next invoice is three taps. Your first three documents are free, full-quality PDF, no watermark. Premium from $59.99/year if you invoice often.
Retainer invoice at booking (usually 25–50%), balance invoice 1–2 weeks before the event or on delivery for portrait sessions. For commercial work, 50% upfront and 50% on delivery is standard.
As a negative line: “Retainer received 12 Jan — −$800”. The total then shows the balance due.
Yes, especially for commercial clients. One line with media, duration and exclusivity is enough on the invoice; the full terms live in the contract.
Often yes on prints and albums, and in some states on digital files and the session itself. Check your state; the template's tax line can apply to selected lines.
A PDF works for one-off invoices. If you shoot weekly, an invoice app with your saved packages sends the invoice before you've packed the car and tracks who still owes a balance.
